Vitamin A compounds (retinol, retinal, beta-carotene) provide effective antixerophthalmic and vitamin A activity.
Retinal combines with opsin in the retina to form rhodopsin, essential for dark adaptation and vision.
Vitamin A maintains epithelial integrity, supports growth, and enhances immune defense.
Absorption occurs in the gastrointestinal tract and requires bile salts, pancreatic lipase, and dietary fat.
Stored mainly in the liver as retinol palmitate; normal adult liver stores suffice for ~2 years.
Adults:
50,000–100,000 IU daily; up to 200,000 IU if medically necessary
Children (Above 1 year):
Night blindness / Xerophthalmia / Bitot’s spots: 200,000 IU on 1st day, 2nd day, and 14th day
Measles: 200,000 IU on 1st and 2nd day
Diarrhoea / Respiratory infections: 200,000 IU after each episode
Severe malnutrition: 200,000 IU single dose or as directed by the physician
Hypervitaminosis A
Sensitivity to any component of the preparation
Overdose or prolonged use may cause:
Pregnancy: Avoid doses exceeding 6,000 IU daily; excess may cause fetal abnormalities (CNS, eyes, palate, urogenital tract).
Breastfeeding: RDA of 5,000 IU daily recommended for nursing mothers.
Maintain free intervals after long-term therapy
High doses (>50,000 IU) are only under medical supervision
Do not exceed 5,000 IU daily during pregnancy
Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture
